Located on Virginia's Middle Peninsula, Essex County is centrally situated just outside the Washington to Norfolk urban crescent.

The county's principal town, Tappahannock, dates back to a 17th century port settlement. The historic cities of Fredericksburg (40 miles north) and Williamsburg (56 miles SE) are within an hour's drive. ​

  • Drive-Thru Rabies Clinic

    09/26/2017 - Annual Drive-Thru Rabies Clinic being held on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at the TEVFD from 8-10 a.m. 

  • Essex County 911 Address Verification

    08/08/2017 - Over the next several months, Timmons Group, an Engineering and Technology firm based in Richmond, is assisting Essex County in correcting their addressing system. Technicians from the firm will be visiting each structure in the county and verifying that the actual E-911 address of the structure matches the address in Essex County’s Geographic Information System. Ensuring that all addresses are accurate and up-to-date will enable first responders to locate an emergency as quickly as possible. 

  • New Board Established - Request for Applications to Serve

    12/19/2016 - The Essex County Board of Supervisors has re-established the Local Board of Building Code Appeals (LBBCA), and is requesting applications from county residents to apply to be appointed to serve on this local board.
