Located on Virginia's Middle Peninsula, Essex County is centrally situated just outside the Washington to Norfolk urban crescent.

The county's principal town, Tappahannock, dates back to a 17th century port settlement. The historic cities of Fredericksburg (40 miles north) and Williamsburg (56 miles SE) are within an hour's drive. ​

  • Online Forms System Maintenance Planned

    04/17/2018 - A System Upgrade will be performed to the online forms system used by Essex County on Saturday, April 21st from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM EST. During this time, online fillable forms will be temporarily unavailable. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. 

  • May 1 Triad Senior Health & Safety Fair

    04/12/2018 - Join the Essex Co.-Tappahannock Triad on Tuesday, May 1 for our first Senior Health & Safety Fair. The event will be from 10 am – 2 pm at Beale Memorial Baptist Church, 19622 Tidewater Trail, Tappahannock. 

  • Essex County Survivor Day Training - April 21, 2018

    04/04/2018 - On Saturday, April 21st, 2018, join public safety partners from across the Central Virginia region in Survivor Day event where you and your family can learn how to live safely through natural disasters and other emergencies. Plus, they'll arm you with a free Survivor Starter Kit (One bag per household; must complete training) 

  • Request for Applications to Serve on Local/Regional Boards, Commissions, and Authorities

    03/30/2018 - The Board of Supervisors is requesting interested Essex County residents apply to serve on local and regional Boards, Commissions, and Authorities (BCAs) which have terms expiring on June 30, 2018. Deadline to apply is May 31, 2018.  

  • New Board Established - Request for Applications to Serve

    12/19/2016 - The Essex County Board of Supervisors has re-established the Local Board of Building Code Appeals (LBBCA), and is requesting applications from county residents to apply to be appointed to serve on this local board.
