ESSEX COUNTY SHERIFF

Deputy Sheriff, Essex County
Essex County is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Deputy Sheriff.
Salary: $34,807.24- $55,691.58 DOQ/DOE (+) benefits.


Essex County is seeking an individual to perform responsible work as a Law Enforcement Patrol Officer, including investigating crimes, answering citizen complaints, making arrests, interviewing witnesses, collecting evidence, serving civil papers, providing court testimony, executing search warrants, performing evictions and other related duties. This position performs work under the supervision of the Sheriff, Captain and or Sergeant.

The successful candidate will have a High school diploma or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess a valid driver’s license, pass a criminal background check and be DCJS certified within 12 months of hire.

Job Title: Communications Operator - Dispatch 
Status:  Full Time, Grade 108, with benefits and
                 Part-time, no benefits

The Sheriff of Essex County is seeking a full time and part-time individuals to perform radio and communications work in the communications division of the Sheriff’s Department on an assigned shift. The Communications Operator position performs skilled emergency service work that involves receiving emergency 911 and non-emergency requests for law enforcement assistance, determining nature/urgency of law enforcement, initiating law enforcement or other emergency personnel action (i.e., Sheriff, Fire, Public works, Animal Control, Virginia Highway Department, etc.) and maintaining close contact with field units to monitor response and needed support requirements. Employee must be able to operate a computer terminal connected to the Virginia Criminal and the National Crime Information Center. Employee must exercise considerable tact and firmness in obtaining information from distressed person(s). Employee must exercise independent judgment and initiative in receiving messages, responding to emergency situations, and dispatching calls. This position performs work under the supervision of the Communications Supervisor.  This position works varied shifts to include nights, weekends, and holidays.

A high school diploma or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job is required.  Must complete Basic Dispatch School and obtain VCIN Certification within first year of employment. A criminal background check is required.

County Administrator, Essex County
Essex County is seeking qualified applicants for the position of County Administrator.

Essex County (11,151), situated on the Middle Peninsula of Virginia, and consisting of over 261 square miles, invites applications from strong candidates to serve as the County’s next County Administrator. 

The County operates with a five member Board of Supervisors who serves as the legislative body of the local government, with four members representing a different jurisdiction within the County and one “atlarge” member, each serving a four year term. The County Administrator is appointed by the Board and serves at the pleasure of the Board, carrying out the Board’s adopted policies, directing business procedures and overseeing day-to-day operations and activities of all County departments. Essex County is operating with a Fiscal Year 2018 General Fund budget of $22.5 million, which supports over 15 department areas ranging from economic development and facilities management to parks and recreation and building and zoning. 

Successful candidates will possess a bachelor’s degree in public or business administration, economics, planning, finance or related field; with a master’s degree preferred. Considerable experience in public or private sector-management or equivalent as chief or deputy chief administrative officer of a comparably sized community or organization is highly desired. Experience in maintaining positive lines of communication at all levels and interacting with various local, regional and state agencies is essential. Candidate should be able to present a confident image of the local government to the County staff and the community in conducting all facets of County business. The Board is seeking a County Administrator who will be a good steward of public funds, build solid working relationships both internal and external to the County and foster a ‘team’ environment with County staff members that welcomes staff feedback and participation.

Salary for this position is negotiable dependent upon candidate education and experience. Planner, Essex County

Essex County is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Planner.
Salary: $37,069.71 - $48,190.62 DOQ/DOE (+) benefits.

Essex County is seeking an individual to perform a variety of community planning and land use code administration functions in the Community Development Department working in close and daily contact with property owners; building contractors; architects, surveyors and other development professionals; and a variety of public officials and staff. Essential functions include long range comprehensive land use planning and special community project planning, administration and enforcement of county land use and development ordinances including regulations specific to coastal and waterfront communities, serving as staff support to various county commissions and boards involved in land use planning and permitting, and assisting the County Administrator and other staff as may be required.  The County Planner will be under the supervision and direction of the County Administrator.


The successful candidate will have any combination of a Bachelors’ degree in Planning, Public Administration, or related field with three years of public or private sector community planning experience with demonstrated knowledge of zoning and subdivision ordinance administration and enforcement.   VAZO or other certified zoning administrator certification, AICP certification, and/or experience with Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act or other coastal/wetland regulations desirable.

Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation, Essex County

This Director of Technology is responsible managing the County’s computer and data resources. This position performs responsible work in planning, coordinating, implementing, and supervising the management of the County’s information systems operation. Payroll & Human Resources Manager, Essex County

Essex County is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Payroll & Human Resources Manager.
Salary: $44,778.34- $58,211.85 DOQ/DOE (+) benefits.

Essex County is seeking an individual responsible for the preparation and processing of county employees pay and benefits; and the calculation, input, withholding, and payment of all deductions; and quarterly, fiscal, and year-end reconciliations and reporting.  Also responsible for personnel management including employee hiring process, benefit orientation, open enrollment, maintenance of personnel records, employee discipline, and other related work.  This position requires sound independent thinking and judgement, high accuracy, essential time management skills, and ability to keep complete confidentiality. Must exercise considerable tact, courtesy, firmness, and discretion in frequent contact with employees, governmental agencies, and the public. This position reports to the Deputy County Administrator. 


The successful candidate will have any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, public or business administration, human resources, or related field associated with essential job functions, and five (5) years of progressive accounting/payroll experience to include use with computerized payroll systems. A combination of accounting/payroll and human resources experience with a unit of local government is preferred.

Job Title:  Basic Life Support EMT/Firefighter

Status:  Full time with benefits, Salary – $32,682.85 - $52,292

Essex County EMS is seeking a highly motivated professional individual to fill a full time Basic Life Support (BLS) EMT/Firefighter position. Candidates will perform emergency medical basic life support services and firefighter duties as required. Applicants must possess a valid Virginia Driver’s license, high school diploma or equivalent, a good driving record, and must be computer literate and have the ability to maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public. Minimum Qualifications: EMT-B, Firefighter I, Hazardous Materials Awareness Certification, EVOC, CPR and within one year obtain Firefighter II and Hazardous Materials Operations certifications.  This position is subject to a criminal background investigation, drug test and health exam.
