Essex County Sheriff

Job Title: Investigator - Reviewing applications/interviewing
Status:  Full Time, Salary - $42,045 Grade 113, with benefits


The Sheriff of Essex County is seeking an individual to perform work investigating all deaths and major crimes in the county, with or without the presumption of malicious intent. This position is responsible for the collection, packaging, and transportation of all evidence, as well as related court testimony. This position acts as the supervising officer at all death-related crime scenes. This position performs work under the supervision of the Sheriff.  A High School Diploma (Associates Degree in police or forensic science preferred) or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job, supplemented by seven (7) years of law enforcement and investigations experience is required.  A valid Virginia driver’s license and criminal background check is required.

Job Title:  Youth Services Specialist - Reviewing applications/interviewing

Status:  Full time, Salary:  $28,815

Pay Grade:  107, FLSA Status:  Non-exempt

Essex County, Virginia, is accepting applications for the newly created full-time position of Youth Services Specialist at the Essex County Library.  This position performs responsible administrative work in assisting with a broad range of public library functions, including but not limited to, programming, materials selection, community outreach, and patron assistance.  The selected individual will conduct a weekly preschool story hour, conduct a summer reading program, conduct book discussion groups, and interact with many community stakeholders to serve youth and their families in a library setting.  This position reports to the Library Director.

Minimum requirements for the position are a high school diploma with a college degree preferred.  Three years of library or prior experience working with children in some capacity is preferred.  The experience may be in a school setting. The County provides a competitive salary with excellent benefits.  A criminal history background check will be required for this position.

Essex County is seeking an individual to create, manage, and supervise programs implemented by the Parks and Recreation department and assist the Director of Parks and Recreation as needed.  The selected individual will work with the Director to determine Community needs and develop programming to meet those needs.  This position supervises all youth sports programming and manages the Marsh Street Pool.  Certification requirements for this position include:  Pool Operator Certification, Lifeguard Certification, CPR and First Aid Certification, and Aquatic Facility Operator Certification.  If not currently certified, the selected individual has 24 months to obtain certification.  This position reports to the Director of Parks and Recreation. This position requires variable work hours on weekends, evenings and holidays.  Essex County, Virginia, is accepting applications for the newly created full-time position of County Planner.  Essex County is a predominantly rural county located on the Virginia Middle Peninsula along the banks of the Rappahannock River. This position will be responsible for a variety of community planning and land use code administration functions including zoning ordinance and subdivision ordinance permitting and administration.  The County Planner will work closely with the public, county staff, and elected and appointed County Boards and Commissions including the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and Board of Supervisors.  Excellent writing and communication skills are a must.  This position will report to and be under the supervision of the County Administrator.

Minimum requirements for the position are a Bachelors’ degree in Planning, Public Administration, or related field with three or more years of public or private sector community planning experience with demonstrated knowledge and experience in zoning and subdivision ordinance administration and enforcement, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position. Experience with Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act or other coastal/wetland regulations are desirable.  Applicants which possess experience and working knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS will receive preferred status among candidates. Essex County EMS is seeking a highly motivated professional individual to fill a full time Basic Life Support (BLS) EMT/Firefighter position. Candidates will perform emergency medical basic life support services and firefighter duties as required. Applicants must possess a valid Virginia Driver’s license, high school diploma or equivalent, a good driving record, and must be computer literate and have the ability to maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public. Minimum Qualifications: EMT-B, Firefighter I, Hazardous Materials Awareness Certification, EVOC, CPR and within one year obtain Firefighter II and Hazardous Materials Operations certifications.  This position is subject to a criminal background investigation, drug test and health exam.
